My heart’s still beating kinda fast for this one. When Jess & Shane first reached out to me, I think I must’ve gone weak-in-the-knees over the plans… even though nothing was finalized yet. Lo and behold, instead of the desert this bash ended up in Santa Barbara where Jess had gone to college. Quite a difference from Palm Springs, and yet still felt just perfect.
They decided to unite their lives at the historic Santa Barabara Carousel House, only recently opened to host weddings. They had a vision of tiki-tropical meets modern. From the modern vibrant colors balancing this classical garden setting, through to their dazzlingly chic wedding outfits (like, are you dying over that mustard suit?), this Santa Barbara wedding is ’bout to fill your eye-holes with happiness. This wedding was bananas.
When we arrived these two were in teeny hotel rooms at the Wayfarer, across the hall from each other, both feeling their feels in a big way. While Jess and Shane didn’t have an official wedding party, they still got prepped with their besties, and it let their crew off the hook from any required formality. A great balance! I’m still swooning like a 17th-century english drama over those emerald green velvet platform shoes.
These two were adamant about not wanting a first look, but we did get a chance to capture some individual portraits of Jess and her informal crew as we did the grand walk through the Funk Zone from the hotel to the venue. So many fab nooks and crannies to document the fun!
That brings us to the ceremony. In the sunken garden in front of a grand old fountain, these two shared the snarkiest and teariest of vows while tourist buses waived as they passed by. The volume and emotional rollercoaster of laughs and cries gave me such a wave of connection. I love when couples are able to find that strange balancer between hilarity and tenderness. These two nailed it.
And then the party got rolling. In this darling historic garden and old Carousel House by the shore, the team did it up with a tiki sense of the islands by bringing in tropical leaves and wooden details surrounded by bold modern touches. Loved how they mixed the industrial with modern with tropical. How fab was that tropical leaves into a hanging arrangement over the dance floor? With the feels and laughs and tears and pizza and handheld bacon and dance madness dreams, this reception was lit.
One of my favorite parts of the day was that we were able to squeeze some time in for this dazzling couple to have a little post-ceremony wander in the funk zone, including discovering several awesome little charming spots, getting lots of hooting and hollering out car windows, and my favorite: a delectable ice-cream pit stop from a little hole in a wall.
Okay, so basically this day just got better and better and better and better still, and this dance party was full crazy. These two had moves like you’ve never seen. Jess & Shane’s creative and irreverent Santa Barbara wedding dazzled my eyeholes and now I want it to dazzle yours.
